Plants of the Forest

Common Name: Coast Red Elderberry Scientific Name: Sambucus callicarpa
Blooms: March - June Native: Yes

Special Comments:

This beautiful tree grows at the start of the ravine near the Pourroy Garden. In Marcel's Forest, elderberry berries ripen in July. But the berries don't stay on the tree long. Within three days after turning red, birds eat all of the berries.

This tree is recognized by the opposite growth of leaves and the one leaflet at the end of the stem.
