Plants of the Forest

Common Name: Fat Solomon's Seal Scientific Name: Smilacina racemosa
Blooms: March - May Native: Yes. Native of the area

Special Comments:  This plant grows trailside near Stop 6 and between Stops 15 and 16. The large oval green leaves look as though they clasp the main stem while the ends of the leaves are pointed. In April small white flowers grow on tiny stalks from the tip of the main stem. Later, in summer, these flowers turn to red berries. Barely visible in the enlarged picture are the small immature blossoms.
