Plants of the Forest

Common Name: Hooker's Fairy Bells Scientific Name: Disporum hookeri
Blooms: Blooms early spring (March-May) Native: Yes. Native of the area

Special Comments:  Leaves of this plant can be seen throughout the year, but the small white blossoms, hanging in pairs from the end of the stem, are seen in spring only. Later, the blossoms form berries that turn red in summer. Find this low-growing plant along the trail between the Ravine Bridge and the Pourroy's Picnic Area.

Enlarge this picture to see the very small white blossom at the very end of the stem. Hooker's Fairy Bells was named after W. J. Hooker, a famous English botanist.
