Plants of the Forest

Common Name: Periwinkle Scientific Name: Vinca major
Blooms: (March - July) Native: No. Introduced Plant

Special Comments:  Periwinkle, a non-native vine planted frequently in home gardens throughout the United States , is considered an invasive plant of concern since it easily takes root in moist, forested areas. In fact, periwinkle is considered such an invasive pest plant that it made it onto the "California Exotic Pest Council List B: Wildland Pest Plants of Lesser Invasiveness." English ivy, even more of a pest plant than periwinkle, made it onto the "A" List.

A native of Europe, periwinkle has dark-green leaves that are noticeable among the vegetation throughout the year at the Pourroy Garden and other sites throughout the forest.
