Reminders for Teachers:
- Don't Drink Creek Water. Drinking untreated water is risky. Park enthusiasts should not drink from the creek or wipe their mouth with hands that have been in the creek since bacteria, such as giardia, are sometimes found in creek water. While giardia is not life-threatening to the majority of humans, caution students about drinking untreated water.
- Stay on the Trails. Once confined to eastern states, Lyme Disease is now known to exist in the western states. Encourage students to stay on trails.
- Take Disposable Wipes. Since there are no bathroom facilities in the forest, take along moistened hand wipes to pass out to students who need to clean their hands. Please remember to be "green" conscious and throw these wipes into the park trash receptacles.
- Take a First-aid Kit. If you hike enough times with students, it's inevitable that someone scrapes an elbow, cuts a finger, or gets stung by a wasp. Even mosquito bites are painful and distracting to some people who are sensitive to them. Take along a small first-aid kit containing band-aids, aspirin, analgesic, and antibiotic ointment.
- Take a Cell Phone. Fully-charged cell phones have worked at each interpretive stop in Marcel's Forest. In an emergency, call 911 first, and then the park rangers. Paramedics sometimes use UTM coordinates to locate the injured. If they should ask for this additional information, the UTM coordinates for Marcel's Forest are Zone 51, Easting 402767; Northing 4094009. The latitude and longitude reading at the Advocates' Seasonal Bridge across Aptos Creek is N36.98719, W121.90741.
- Take These Helpful Items. Magnification loops, notebooks, rulers, pencils, compasses, and daypacks which hold drinking water in plastic bottles. Ask students to wear jeans, a t-shirt covered by a lightweight jacket, and old shoes.
