Outdoor Education....Some thoughts to consider:

Just about everyone has taken a field trip. Maybe that person attended a field trip with school, church, or was home-schooled and took time away from the classroom for an outing with parents. Field trips, according to one fourth grader, "are fun," and most students enjoy going some place new.

Educators sometimes question if students actually learn while on field field trips since classroom control is often relinquished. While some studies indicate that field trip education by itself might not produce significant learning, other studies show that when pre-visit materials are used before some field trips, learning increases.

Because field trips can play an integral part in learning, the following pages have been developed to supplement lesson plans with ideas and acitvities to use while visiting the forest. The Curriculum Notebook, following this page, lists teaching activities for visits to Marcel's Forest, while the Materials Drawer offers a list of other supplemental resources. Teachers are encouraged to download and use information from this website.
