Plants of the Forest

Common Name: Thimbleberry Scientific Name: Rubus parviflorus
Blooms: In Marcel's Forest (March - August) Native: Yes

Special Comments:  Thimbleberry bushes grow trailside east of the creek not far from the Advocates' Seasonal Bridge. However, this plant can also be seen at the Pourroy Garden and along the creek's edges.

Look for a plant with pointed, five-lobed leaves (touch the leaves -- you'll notice how soft they are). When in bloom, it's flowers resemble small white roses. Early settlers ate the berries raw or cooked into pies and jams. Women of these pioneer families sometimes rubbed the hairy leaves of the thimbleberry onto their cheeks as rouge.
