Plants of the Forest

Common Name: Wood Strawberry Scientific Name: Fragaria californica
Blooms: (January - June) Native: Yes. Native of the area

Special Comments:  Native strawberries tend to grow near streams or in shaded woods. In Marcel's Forest, wild strawberries can be found at Pourroy's Garden where a natural seep is suspected to exist. They bloom in spring and bear fruit in June. Botanists K. Lyons and M. B. Cuneo-Lazaneo report that some tribes of Native Americans made tea from the leaves to prevent dysentary.
