Plants of the Forest

Common Name: Yerba buena Scientific Name: Satureja douglasii
Blooms: Green mint Native: Yes

Special Comments:  A member of the mint family that grows as groundcover, yerba buena emits a distinct fragrance. Some people call it a wintergreen smell. The well-known historian Theodore Hittell wrote in 1885 that the original name of San Francisco was "Yerba Buena" because of this common "minty little vine." Dried leaves of the yerba buena can be used to make a good-tasting tea.

Keep your eyes and nose alert for this plant in Pourroy's Garden and along the trail near the Kiosk.
