Volunteer For Trailwork
Why volunteer?
The Forest of Nisene Marks has many miles of trails used by thousands of hikers and bikers each year. The trails suffer from the natural erosion of wind and rain
and from the use by park visitors. California State Parks has limited resources for monitoring and maintaining the quality of these trails. It is up to us who use and love the park to make sure that the trails as well as the overall environment of the park is maintained.
What do volunteers do?
The Advocates work crew leaders work with the State Park rangers to identify areas in the park which need attention. Usually one Sunday per month is scheduled to get volunteer work crews together to tackle the identified projects. Volunteers usually meet at the ranger kiosk area around 8:30 A.M. and are assigned to a particular work crew leader. The work crew, with picks, shovels and other trailworking tools, then hikes, or is transported, to a project area. Workdays usually last until early to mid afternoon. You should come equiped with the following:
- Long sleeve shirt and long pants are recommended to protect against poison oak
- Heavy duty shoes appropriate for hiking and working
- Work gloves
- Lunch
- Bottled water
